A few weeks ago I DJed the Black Heart venue in Camden. I was DJing between bands and was asked to play mixture of alternative, goth and industrial classics from the 90's. I got to dig out some forgotten favourites and it was a great night.

The line-up was as Ghost of Lemora, Cryogenica & Jindivik. There was a great turnout and a great atmosphere.

On the way home I lost the headphones I've had for about 14 years. Their (very nice) replacements have arrived but I still can't bring myself to use them. It's not like I even used them for my most memorable gigs. I'll have to just deal with their loss as collateral damage from DJing. I'm still sulking :(

Anyway, here's what I played:

Clan of Xymox - Stumble and Fall
The Last Dance - Fairytale (The Storm)
The Merry Thoughts - Low Violet
Children On Stun - Sidelined
Libitina - Painter Whiter Than White
Emma Conquest - Bang You're Dead
Passion Play - Falling Upwards
Die Laughing - Queen Of Swords
Malaise - Walking throught the Wonderland
Front Line Assembly - Mindphaser (Edited Version)
Faithful Dawn - She Falls Down (PWM)
Intra-Venus - Celestial Sin
Rosetta Stone - Hiding In Waiting
Dreadful Shadows - Fall
One - Walk the Mercy Mile
Sister Machine Gun - Sins of the Flesh
Nine Inch Nails - Wish
Nekromantik - Children Go Bang
Star Industry - Sodium Haze
Depeche Mode - It's No Good
Diary Of Dreams - Retaliation
The Last Dance - Do You Believe In Angels
Clan of Xymox - This World
Suspiria - (Now, We See) The Swine
Killing Miranda - Burn sinister
The Marionettes - Ave Dementia
The Horatii - Darrell & Alicia
The Merry Thoughts - Low Violet
London After Midnight - Where Good Girls Go To Die
Eyes Of The Nightmare Jungle - Shadow Dance
The Wake - Sideshow
Diva Destruction - The Broken Ones
Rosetta Stone - adrenaline (hard)
Skinny Puppy - Assimilate

I'm a bit behind on posting setlists. Here's what I played at Yesterday's Shadow in London. It's a monthly DJ event in a bar in London where you can hear 'Retro Echoes from the 80's Era'.  I strayed into moden day music inspired by 80's synthpop and it went down well I think :)

Clan Of Xymox - Stranger
Specimen - Hex
Fad Gadget - Coitus Interruptus
Alphaville - Sounds Like A Melody
The Human League - The Sound Of The Crowd
Depeche Mode - New Life
Gary Numan - Metal
Camouflage - The Great Commandment
Heaven 17 - Temptation
Ultravox - All Stood Still
David Bowie - Let's Dance
Ashbury Heights - Glow
Real Life - Send Me An Angel (2009 Version)
Chvrches - Leave A Trace
New Order - True Faith ('94)
Ladytron - Destroy Everything You Touch
Wolfsheim - The Sparrows And The Nightingales
Depeche Mode - Enjoy The Silence (Reinterpreted)

The first Blacklist of 2010 will be this Friday (5th February). This year we plan to continue to provide you with a refreshing mix of DJs ever first Friday of the month and still all for free. The music policy is still “dark music from 1977 onwards”, which includes various flavours goth, indie, rock etcetera

This month’s DJs will be
  • Victoria Fenbane (that me!). Resident DJ of the Goth Floor at Slimelight and making a return to DJing after a small break and bursting to let you hear some of the excellent music she has come across in her time out.
  • Steve Nine (previously know as Knine or ‘Steve from the Dev’) will be providing the visuals for the night as usual, along with DJ sets featuring music videos for extra eye candy.
  • Andy Ravensable providing top sounds of the dark kind.
  • Ben Christo of Sisters of Mercy, who is a regular guest of Slimelight’s Goth Floor as well as being resident at Inferno. (Ben will be playing the 9pm-10pm set before he dashes off to DJ at Inferno.)

The Elixir Bar can be found at 162 Eversholt Street, 5 mins from Euston and Mornington Crescent Tube stations. Blacklist runs from 8pm to 1pm and there is a happy hour on cocktails until 9pm. The Elixir Bar also serves tasty and reasonably priced food until 10:30pm. There is no admission fee and no dress code at Blacklist (feel free to get dressed up if you like, many of us will be).

Spotify

Spotify is finally available for Symbian phones (i.e. my trusty N- series Nokia) so I have bought myself a premier account for a month to see if it is any good. Of course being a tube using Londoner means I need to be able to use it in Offline mode, so I will have to see how O2 feel about me downloading lots of data on my phone on my ‘Unlimited’ Internet Add On. Depends on availability of the music I’m interested in I suppose, but it is good to be able to properly test drive music before deciding whether to buy it. I won’t need CDs to DJ off for much longer so I am in the market for a good mp3 purchasing solution. It also means I can listen to Spotify playlists in the gym and can listen to an artist I do not have on my phone if the fancy takes me.

While I’m on the subject, I have today had a proper listen to the most recent A Spell Inside release ‘Loginside’. Fans of A23, Diorama, Mesh etc should give it a listen as it is quality stuff. Even more important is that is it top notch synth-pop in a world awash with synth-pop bands, many of which are samey and mediocre. I’ve liked them for a few years but this release is a leap in quality for them. I know their promo/booking person and would like them to get a better UK following so I could bring them over (and finally see them live). They also sound a lot like the better known Behind the Scenes, a band with the same vocalist and includes an ex member of 90’s Goth favourites The Merry Thoughts…
